Three Days of History and High Country Adventure: Medicine Lodge to the Bighorns

Tucked along the western edge of the Bighorn Mountains, Medicine Lodge State Archaeological Site offers a perfect blend of history, quiet landscapes, and outdoor adventure. This three day trip is designed to help you experience ancient petroglyphs, peaceful canyon fishing, and optional high country exploration near Paintrock Lakes.

Getting there is straightforward from anywhere in the Big Horn Basin. From Worland, head north on Highway 20 toward Basin, and turn off at Manderson, follow the road and you’ll see a sign then turn right at the Manderson Town Hall, you can’t miss the giant M. From Greybull, take Highway 20 through Basin and keep going until you turn off at Manderson, you’ll see the Hi Way Bar and Cafe then turn left at the Manderson Town Hall. The drive itself sets the tone for the trip, transitioning from open basin country into red rock canyon and rising foothills.

Day 1: Ancient Stories and Red Rock Canyon at Medicine Lodge State Archaeological Site

Start your trip just east of Hyattville at Medicine Lodge State Archaeological Site, one of Wyoming’s most culturally significant locations. The towering red cliffs hold centuries old petroglyphs and pictographs left by Indigenous peoples, along with historic inscriptions from early settlers.

Spend the morning walking the paved and interpretive trails that wind along the cliff face. The main petroglyph panels are easily accessible, but take time to explore further down the canyon where fewer visitors venture. You can also explore the cabin that shows more history and artifacts or the interpretive cabins showing more about the area and wildlife. For an immersive trip through time head over the red barn and talk to the staff.

In the afternoon, settle into the campground or picnic areas. The quiet, wide open landscape makes it easy to slow down and take it all in. If you’re up for more activity, take a short hike along the canyon rim for sweeping views of the surrounding basin. There are a number of trails that go up both sides of the canyon, look for signs, or ask for directions.

Wrap up your evening with a relaxed dinner in nearby Hyattville, if you don’t feel like cooking, a small town that perfectly captures the laid back character of the Big Horn Basin. Be sure to check out the Paintrock Inn online and call in advance.

Day 2: Fishing, Hiking, and Backcountry Beauty in Medicine Lodge Canyon

Today is all about getting outside. The creek that runs through Medicine Lodge Canyon offers opportunities for fishing, particularly for trout in quieter stretches. Early morning or late afternoon tends to be best.

After fishing, switch gears and explore more of the canyon on foot. There are informal trails and game paths that follow the creek and climb into the surrounding foothills. Expect a mix of sagebrush, juniper, and rock formations with excellent views.

For lunch, pack a cooler and find a shaded spot near the water. The peaceful setting is part of what makes this area special. It feels remote without requiring a long trek.

In the afternoon, consider a short drive to explore more of the surrounding Bighorn foothills or simply return to camp and unwind. The lack of crowds here is one of the biggest advantages.

Day 3: Optional High Country Escape to Paintrock Lakes

If you want to elevate the adventure, spend your final day heading into the Bighorn Mountains toward the Paintrock Lakes area.

This option requires more driving and a bit of effort, but it delivers classic Wyoming alpine scenery. The lakes sit high in the mountains and offer excellent hiking and fishing opportunities. Trails range from moderate to more challenging, with rewarding views of clear water, rugged peaks, and wildflowers in season.

Bring layers, as weather can change quickly at elevation. Even a short hike to one of the lower lakes provides a completely different landscape from the canyon below.

If you prefer a slower pace, you can skip the mountain drive and instead revisit your favorite spots around Medicine Lodge or Hyattville, enjoying one more morning of fishing or a quiet walk along the canyon.

Day 3 Option: Slow Down and Soak It In at Medicine Lodge State Archaeological Site

If you prefer a more relaxed final day, skip the drive into the mountains and stay close to camp. The quiet atmosphere around Medicine Lodge is one of its greatest strengths, and this is your chance to fully enjoy it.

Start your morning with coffee as the sun lights up the red canyon walls, then take an easy walk along the creek or revisit your favorite petroglyph panels when the light is different and the crowds are minimal. This is also a great time for one last round of fishing, especially in the calm early hours.

Spend the afternoon reading, napping, or enjoying a long picnic in the shade. The surrounding valley near Hyattville offers wide open views and a peaceful pace that is hard to find elsewhere.

Before heading home, take a final slow drive through the canyon, appreciating the stillness and history that make this area such a memorable destination.
