The town of Basin is preparing to welcome residents and visitors for the annual Lilac Days celebration on June 5 and 6, combining hometown traditions, family activities, local history, and a special tribute to America’s 250th birthday.
This year’s event embraces the nation’s upcoming Semiquincentennial celebration, and organizers are encouraging everyone to wear red, white, and blue throughout the weekend. The patriotic theme will be reflected in several activities, including a new “Why I Love America” contest for children in first through fifth grades.
Friday Night Kicks Off at the Basin Heritage Commons
The celebration begins Friday evening at the Basin Heritage Commons, located on the southeast corner of Fourth and C Streets. Visitors can enjoy food from Up in Smoke BBQ and refreshments from EJD’s Creative Sips beginning at 5:30 p.m.
At 6 p.m., community members will gather for the official ribbon cutting of the new Basin mural, followed by the sealing of a community time capsule at 6:15 p.m. The evening concludes with a live performance by Man in Tan, giving attendees an opportunity to relax, visit with neighbors, and enjoy music under the summer sky.
The evening will also offer a glimpse into the future of the Basin Heritage Commons. Conceptual plans for the area will be on display, and visitors will have the opportunity to purchase commemorative legacy bricks and pavers that will become a permanent part of the project.
A Full Day of Family Fun on Saturday
Saturday’s activities move to Washington Park, beginning with the annual Gottsche 5K Run/Walk. Registration opens at 8 a.m., and the race begins at 9 a.m., with prizes awarded in multiple categories.
A free community breakfast hosted by Basin First Baptist follows at 9:30 a.m., featuring pancakes and ham. At 10 a.m., Mayor CJ Duncan will welcome attendees before the national anthem is performed by Merrita Powell and live music is provided by Bret Savage.
Throughout the morning, families can enjoy a variety of activities including children’s games, sidewalk art, vendors, the Basin Police Department Bike Rodeo, and the American Legion Post 29 car show.
One of the newest additions to this year’s celebration is the “Why I Love America” contest at 10:15 a.m. Children in first through fifth grades are invited to share a short one- or two-sentence speech expressing what America means to them. No pre-registration is required.
Other longtime favorites return as well, including the Lilac Baby Contest for children ages 0 to 2, the Lilac Princess Contest for area girls in grades five through twelve, and the crowning of the 2026 Lilac Queen.
Celebrating Community Heritage
While the activities provide plenty of entertainment, Lilac Days remains rooted in celebrating the people who have shaped Basin through generations of service and community involvement. The Lilac Queen tradition continues to honor women whose contributions have made a lasting difference in the community, while the Princess Contest highlights Wyoming’s historic role as the first government in the nation to grant women the right to vote.
From community breakfasts and car shows to concerts, contests, and family activities, Lilac Days offers a chance to reconnect with neighbors and celebrate the traditions that continue to make Basin a special place to call home.
Whether you’re participating in the 5K, cheering on contestants, enjoying live music, or simply spending the day in the park, Lilac Days promises a weekend filled with small-town charm, community pride, and patriotic spirit.
