Meeteetse Museums Offers June 13th Guided Tour of Legend Rock Petroglyph Site

Some of Wyoming’s most remarkable stories were never written down. Instead, they were carved into stone.

On June 13, visitors will have a rare opportunity to explore one of the state’s most significant archaeological treasures when the Meeteetse Museums hosts guided tours of the Legend Rock State Petroglyph Site led by renowned archaeologist Dr. Julie Francis.

Located about 40 miles south of Meeteetse, Legend Rock preserves an extraordinary collection of Indigenous rock art stretching across a towering sandstone cliff. The site contains more than 92 petroglyph panels and over 300 individual figures, making it one of the largest and most important petroglyph sites in Wyoming.

While visitors can explore Legend Rock on their own throughout much of the year, touring the site alongside an expert offers a deeper understanding of the people, cultures, and stories represented in the ancient carvings.

A Window into Wyoming’s Ancient Past

Legend Rock’s images were created over thousands of years by Native peoples who lived, traveled, hunted, and gathered throughout the region. The carvings include human figures, animals, geometric shapes, hunting scenes, and spiritual imagery that provide clues about the lives and beliefs of the people who created them.

Standing beneath the site’s nearly vertical 1,300-foot cliff, visitors can view artwork that spans generations and cultures, creating a direct connection to Wyoming’s distant past.

Dr. Julie Francis, one of the region’s leading archaeologists and rock art experts, will provide interpretation throughout the tour, helping participants understand the significance of the images and the archaeological research that continues to reveal new insights about the site.
