Summer may be winding down, but several special events remain on the 2026 calendar at Medicine Lodge State Archaeological Site near Hyattville.
Known for its towering sandstone cliffs, ancient rock art and scenic setting along Medicine Lodge Creek, the site offers visitors a distinctive combination of history, outdoor recreation and Bighorn Basin scenery. The remaining schedule includes opportunities to learn fly fishing, enjoy outdoor cooking and experience the site during an evening Halloween hike.
Fly Fishing Experience 3
Saturday, August 22 at 10 a.m.
The third Fly Fishing Experience of the season will begin at park headquarters. Surrounded by the quiet beauty of Medicine Lodge Creek, the program offers participants an opportunity to spend a late summer morning developing their fly fishing knowledge and skills.

Dutch Oven Contest
Saturday, September 5 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Dutch oven cooking takes center stage during this early September event. The contest celebrates a style of outdoor cooking closely associated with camping, ranching and life in the West.
The event will begin at park headquarters and run through the early afternoon. Registration is required for those participating in the contest.
Women’s Campout
Friday, September 11 through Sunday, September 13
Medicine Lodge will host a three day Women’s Campout centered on fly fishing. The weekend provides an opportunity to spend time outdoors, build fishing skills and enjoy the landscape surrounding one of Wyoming’s most remarkable archaeological sites.
Registration is required for the campout.
Fly Fishing Experience 4
Saturday, September 19 at 9 a.m.
The fourth and final scheduled Fly Fishing Experience of 2026 will begin at park headquarters. The September program offers another chance to learn and practice fly fishing as cooler fall weather begins to settle over the Bighorn Basin.
Advance registration is required.
Haunted Hike
Saturday, October 24 at 5 p.m.
The season concludes with a Haunted Hike through Medicine Lodge. Beginning at 5 p.m., the event invites visitors to experience the park’s cliffs, trails and historic surroundings as daylight fades on an autumn evening.
With its rugged landscape and thousands of years of human history, Medicine Lodge provides an atmospheric setting for a Halloween season adventure.
