Wyoming Game and Fish Investigates Widespread Fish Deaths in Salt River

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is investigating widespread fish mortality along the Salt River in Star Valley.

Biologists and anglers have reported dead or dying fish throughout the river between the Salt River Range and Palisades Reservoir. The mortality appears to be primarily affecting mountain whitefish, although the fish have not displayed visible external symptoms.

Game and Fish began investigating after receiving reports from local anglers. Department biologists conducted field observations and collected several fish for analysis at the Fish Health Laboratory in Laramie.

No specific cause has been identified.

Water temperatures do not currently appear unusually high. According to Game and Fish, afternoon temperatures in the river have been peaking around 62 degrees.

“We appreciate the anglers who quickly brought this to our attention,” Jackson Region Fisheries Biologist Darren Rhea said. “Prompt reporting is critical for our effective response. We are gathering necessary samples to better understand the situation and will provide updates as more information becomes available.”

The Salt River will remain open for fishing and other recreational activities while fisheries managers monitor conditions. However, visitors should expect to encounter significant numbers of dead or dying fish.

Anglers practicing catch and release are encouraged to follow fish handling best practices to reduce stress. Fish should be landed quickly and kept in the water during release whenever possible.

Game and Fish is also asking the public to report additional fish mortalities observed in waterways across the Jackson Region. Reports can be made to the department’s Jackson Regional Office at 307-733-2321.
